The owners of Lola’s Pizza Palace in Arlington Heights collect carved wooden masks, vintage lamps and other artwork from closed historic tiki bars around the country to create this island oasis. Drinks based on Trader Vic’s and Don the Beachcomber recipes or invented by the bar’s own mixologists are served in playful mugs shaped like turtles, whales and seahorses—which are also available for purchase. The menu changes seasonally so there’s always a new dramatic concoction incorporating dry ice, fire or glowing lights along with plenty of rum, fresh fruit and housemade syrups.
