If you’re looking for an Irish pub in Chicago, the list starts with Chief O'Neill's. Named after an Irish immigrant who served as the General Superintendent of Chicago's police force at the turn of the 20th century, this Avondale spot embodies the spirit of the Emerald Isle. Irish stout isn’t just on tap—it’s also in dishes like Guinness and cheddar soup, and steak and Guinness pie. Fridays are for all-you-care-to-eat fish fries while Sundays are for the popular brunch buffet plus live Irish music in the evenings, but you’re just as likely to find a pub quiz or comedy show happening on any given night. And for St. Patrick’s Day, Chief O’Neill’s hosts the neighborhood’s annual parade along with a host of other events. During the warmer months, the restaurant’s expansive beer garden is the place to be. Because nothing beats fish and chips and a cold pint outside.
