Often referred to as a “master of the macabre,” Chicago artist Ivan Albright devoted much of his career to portraying the decaying human body, accentuating the grotesque nature of the physical manifestations of age and disease. The exhibition includes more than 30 of Albright's works, including the portrait he painted for the 1945 film adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Come May, many Chicago museums and galleries are gearing up for major summer exhibitions, but you'll still find some amazing works on display throughout the city. The month begins with an exhibit dedicated to the macabre art of Chicago-native painter Ivan Albright at the Art Institute. After appearing at the Auditorium Theatre, Ai Weiwei will bring his "Trace" exhibition (which displays portraits made of out of Lego bricks) to Lincoln Park. You'll also find a group show by Scandinavian artists at Vertical Gallery and an exhibit dedicated to Thai painter Tang Chang at the Smart Museum of Art. Embrace the creative spirit of the season at the best Chicago art exhibitions opening in May.
