In the 1880s, Belgian artist James Ensor began working on a gigantic drawing that spanned 51 sheets of paper and was six feet tall. The Temptation of Saint Anthony depicted the titular saint surrounded by modern corruption. Ensor lived with the piece in his home for several year, modifying it as time passed. The Art Institute presents a fully restored version of the 19th century work, on loan from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp as well as pieces from Ensor's early career.
