The Christmas spirit is in full swing in Cascais. Alongside the lights, market, parade, and ferris wheel by the bay, the opening of another Cascais Xmas Village at Parque Marechal Carmona on November 23rd has been announced. But there’s more: the Business Association of the Municipality of Cascais (AECC) is hosting a contest to find the best "bolo-rei", inviting local bakeries, pastry shops, and confectioneries to present the finest versions of this traditional Christmas treat. The competition will also feature "bolos-rainha" and creative twists on the classic "bolo-rei".

The evaluation will take place over three blind tastings, with criteria like uniformity, colour and shine, texture, and flavour. The judging panel includes Chef Yullia Sieraia from Cascais FoodLab and Nelson Félix from the Estoril Higher Institute of Hospitality and Tourism. In 2023, the grand prize went to Pastelaria Bijou, renowned for its Cascais-style "areias" and walnut treats.

The AECC isn’t stopping at cakes; to further promote local commerce, it’s also launching a Christmas window display competition. Shops have until December 15th to register, and the winners for the most charming displays will be announced on January 6th.
