The Lisbon Zoo is celebrating its 140th anniversary, and the festivities extend beyond Sete Rios. Until the end of July, some species such as penguins, zebras, turtles and gorillas will be on display at the Paredão in Cascais. Not the animals themselves, but photographs that make up the exhibition "Threatened by Human Action."
Comprising 28 large-format panels, the exhibition aims to raise public awareness about the urgent need to act for the conservation of animals and their natural habitats. Next to each image, there will be information about the respective endangered species, such as the Iberian lynx or the Japanese crane.
The initiative, displayed in the area near the tunnel leading to Parque Palmela, is a partnership between the Lisbon Zoo and the Cascais City Council, and includes free guided tours. On the 3rd, 5th, 18th, 22nd and 26th of June, and the 6th and 13th of July, between 10:00 and 11:30, Zoo educators will provide more detailed stories behind each photograph.
There is also a contest allowing visitors to win tickets to the Lisbon Zoo. To participate, simply find the interactive panel with a QR code and answer the question: What can each of us do to contribute to the conservation of species? "This contest encourages reflection on how we can preserve endangered habitats," said a member of the organisation. "The important thing is to let creativity and environmental awareness flow."
The two most creative answers will be rewarded with four tickets, including an exclusive guided family tour. Entries close on the 14th of July, and the winners will be announced a month later on the Ambiente Cascais website.
