International Bat Night has been celebrated since the 1990s from 24th to 25th of August. This year, Parques de Sintra will mark the occasion a day early, on 23rd of August, with a special event at 19.30 in the gardens of National Palace of Queluz. The aim is to debunk myths and raise awareness about the importance of preserving the species.

"Among box hedges, trees, statues, and lakes, participants will be challenged to search for the bats flying over the royal gardens from sunset onwards", reads a statement about the event, which will be guided by biologist Mário Carmo. Attendees will learn about how bats live and hunt, and why they are crucial for ecosystem balance. "It will also be an opportunity to hear the sounds that bats emit using ultrasound technology and to learn about echolocation".

Tickets for this approximately two-hour activity are available on the Parques de Sintra website, ranging from 10€ for youth (ages 6 to 17) to 12€ for adults.

Alternatively, the Municipality of Cascais is also organising a bat night. Scheduled for 31st of August, from 20.30 to 22.30 at Quinta do Pisão, it costs 4€ per participant, and registration must be made in advance via email (atividadesnatureza@cascaisambiente.pt).
