It's called "LandArt Cascais," a biennial exhibition that brings artworks to the natural territory of the municipality. The 11th edition started on June 8th at Quinta do Pisão, a large green space located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.
This time, curator Luísa Soares de Oliveira invited artists Francisca Carvalho, Pedro Vaz, and Rui Matos to develop works around the concepts of "home" and "shelter" that could integrate into the landscape of Quinta do Pisão.
Painter Francisca Carvalho created "A Multiplicação dos Fingidos" (The Multiplication of the Feigned), a work conceived from an old chapel, now a ruin, where remnants of ancient mural decorations known as "feigned" can still be found. These decorations emulated noble materials. The chapel's decoration was expanded using hand-dyed fabrics, a technique the artist has been developing over the past years.
Pedro Vaz has built a "One-night Shelter," a temporary refuge where visitors can seek shelter. Besides featuring a three-dimensional structure, the goal was to provide extended contact between people and the surrounding nature, facilitating physical interaction with the artwork.
Rui Matos, on the other hand, erected an archaeological object titled "Passagem Cega." The Quinta do Pisão hosts several archaeological structures, and the artist envisioned a fictitious one, imagining it to have been inhabited by men and women from the past. He invites visitors to project into the present the signs and traces of these lives from long ago. These pieces will remain there until September 1st, under the programmatic management of the Fundação D. Luís I, in a joint initiative with the Cascais Municipal Council.
