After showcasing works by Nicholas Nixon, Ruth Orkin, and Michael Grecco, the Centro Cultural de Cascais is preparing to open another photography exhibition. "Rodney Smith - The Alchemy of Light" will present the work of the American photographer, known for his clever images that illustrate surrealist settings, often with compositions that prioritised aesthetics.

The Rodney Smith exhibition brings together over a hundred images, ranging from portraits to landscapes. The New York-born photographer, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 68, meticulously crafted “scenes,” as the exhibition synopsis describes, “fantastical, curious, paradoxical, and romantic stories and narratives that make the world appear clearer and sharper, finding order in chaos”.

His photographs were captured on film and illuminated with natural light. There were no post-processing or edits in his work. He began his career as a documentary photographer, and it was only in the 1980s, when he was in his 40s, that his work caught the attention of art directors and magazines, leading to collaborations with numerous prestigious publications.

"Rodney Smith - The Alchemy of Light" will be on display until May 25th. At the same time, the Centro Cultural de Cascais is hosting the exhibitions "Página 37" by artist Tomás Serrão (until April 6th), and "Manifestações" by artist Ana Lima-Netto (until April 20th).
