The weather forecast doesn’t threaten rain, but if you’re planning a trip to Cascais this weekend, don’t forget that the Ironman triathlon is set for Saturday, October 19th. The largest sporting event of the year in the area will welcome over 4,600 athletes from around the globe, inevitably impacting traffic in the town and surrounding areas.
Saturday will see the most road closures: the Avenida Marginal, which connects Lisbon to Cascais, will be closed to traffic from 08.00 to 19.30. Traffic will also be restricted in Baía de Cascais and the Marina between 09.00 and 20.00; on Avenida da República (better known as Estrada do Guincho) from 00.00 to 24.00; and on the streets of Torre, Vidoeiros, Pinheiros, Faias, Narcejas, Codernizes, Ivone Silva, and Areia between 10.30 and 16.00. In Estoril, there will be closures on Avenida D. Nuno Álvares Pereira (08.00-17.30) and in Carcavelos on Av. Conde Riba d'Aves (08.00-18.00).
On Sunday, traffic will only be restricted on Passeio D. Luís I, Avenida Dom Carlos I, Alameda dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra, and Avenida Rei Humberto II de Itália (the areas between the bay and the marina).
On Thursday and Friday, restrictions will be limited to the bay and Marina from 06.00 to 24.00.
The Polícia de Segurança Pública advises using public transport, ensuring vehicles are parked properly and "without visible valuables", and complying with police instructions "with total willingness".
