Cascais Cultural Centre will be celebrating the punk movement until 28 January 2024. “Days of Punk” is a multimedia exhibition by American photographer Michael Grecco, who experienced and captured for time eternal concerts and backstage moments of various bands in clubs in New York and Boston between the late 70s and early 90s.
The punk icons photographed by Michael Grecco over the years include The Ramones, The Clash, Johnny Rotten, The Dead Kennedys, Billy Idol and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Many of his images, taken without any filters or touch-ups, help to record the irreverence of punk culture, a counter-culture movement with a rebellious spirit and strong political and social influence.
The exhibition comprises more than 100 photographs, but also some video footage captured by Grecco himself, including testimonies from punk rock's protagonists. Visitors will also be able to experience soundscapes made specifically for “Days of Punk” by Roger Miller and Peter Prescott, from the band Mission of Burma. There are also some items on display, such as facsimiles of Boston Rock magazine and some original posters made by Dini Lamot, a former member of Human Sexual Response.
At 65, Michael Grecco is an award-winning photographer who is recognised for his iconic portraits, magazine covers and advertisements. Throughout his career, he has published images in magazines such as Rolling Stone, Time and Vanity Fair, among many others. His book, Punk, Post Punk, New Wave: Onstage, Backstage, In Your Face 1978-1991, published in 2020, was a resounding success and revealed for the first time the photographs that are now on display in Cascais.
“Days of Punk” is a production from the D. Luís I Foundation, with the collaboration of Cascais City Council, and is part of the Bairro dos Museus programme. The exhibition was organised by Michael Grecco himself in collaboration with the Portuguese production company Terra Esplêndida, which is also responsible for the project’s international tour.
