One of the most iconic races in Formula 1 history took place at Estoril, and it will be recreated to mark the 40th anniversary. On April 21st, 1985, amid heavy rain, Ayrton Senna secured his first victory at the Formula 1 circuit, during the Portuguese Grand Prix at Autódromo do Estoril.
This year, on precisely April 21st, the car driven by the late Brazilian driver – who became famous for dominating rain-soaked races – will return to Estoril for a recreation of the event. The car in question is the Lotus 97T JPS, a single-seater with the colours of the tobacco company John Player Special. The Estoril Circuit promises to reveal more details about this special event soon.
In 1985, the race was halted due to severe weather, with only nine cars still on the track. Ayrton Senna was leading and went on to win the Portuguese Grand Prix. Widely regarded as one of the most iconic drivers in the sport's history, the Brazilian tragically passed away during a race on May 1, 1994, at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
