The Cascais Cultural Centre is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the American photojournalist and filmmaker Ruth Orkin (1921-85), with 120 photographs, films and personal objects (letters, excerpts from newspapers and magazines, pages from the artist's diary and a camera) that provide insight into the era in which she lived and her view of it.
She has signed works for The New York Times and Life magazine, among others, but also works in her own name, such as the essay Don't Be Afraid to Travel Alone (to which the featured photo belongs) about the experience of travelling alone as a woman in post-war Europe. She has also made a name for herself as a portraitist - Alfred Hitchcock, Marlon Brando, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Albert Einstein and Leonard Bernstein, among others, have passed through her lens.
