It’s the most wonderful time of the year… no, not Christmas. Easter, when it’s almost our duty to eat as much chocolate as humanly possible! And whether your palate leans towards silky truffles, fruity confections or handcrafted slabs of 70%, Cape Town’s chocolatiers are doing delicious things with cocoa... and we’re here for it!

Cape Town’s chocolate scene is as diverse as it is decadent, so this year rather skip the supermarket eggs and support our local creators instead. Whether you're after a last-minute Easter gift or a sugar hit to enjoy in solo indulgence, you’ll find it in the Mother City. Think bean-to-bar producers using ethically sourced cocoa, experimental flavour pairings and chocolate studios that double as cafés and creative spaces.

Here are Time Out’s favourite spots for getting your chocolate fix in and around Cape Town… just don’t blame us if you can’t stop at one bite!

Go loco for cocoa in the Mother City!

Afrikoa

Hidden away inside Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront, Afrikoa is a bean-to-bar chocolate studio that celebrates African ingredients and craftsmanship. While you could simply stop by to stock up on their wide range of bars and truffles, rather stay for the 30-minute experience, where one of the chocolatiers will guide you through the entire chocolate-making journey, from roasting Tanzanian heirloom cacao to producing the final glossy bars of deliciousness. Along with tasting through the range of chocolate styles, you can shop their complete selection of bars, truffles, and confections, and chat with the team about their direct-trade ethos. Their 37% Milk Chocolate bar is the signature best-seller, but also check out their truffles and triple-chocolate salted caramel brownies!

Honest Chocolate

Whether you buy online or stop in at their charming wood-panelled café on Wale Street, you’ll find that Honest Chocolate is perhaps as famous for their colourfully creative wrappers as they are for what’s inside: delicious bars of hand-crafted chocolate made in small batches using organically produced Tanzanian cacao beans and local agave syrup. The result is ethically sourced, bean-to-bar treats that are both organic and vegan. Don’t miss the 54% dark ‘mylk’ chocolate with salted almond (R70), and if you stop by the Café you’ll definitely want to try the double chocolate almond brownie. Chocoholics can also book in for a hands-on chocolate-making workshop at their Woodstock production kitchen.

Hippolytas Chocolate

Handmade by a team of chocolatiers in their Century City studio,  the morsels of deliciousness from Hippolytas Chocolate are what you’ll find on your pillow at some of Cape Town’s most exclusive hotels. But happily, you don’t have to fork out for a night’s stay (although we’d recommend it) to taste these exquisite creations. Hippolytas Chocolate offers online ordering, with delivery to your door. You'll find a range of handcrafted chocolate slabs, pralines, and bars on offer, along with colourful and creative ‘Hot Chocolate Stix’ that are perfect for gifting. Their best-seller is the Heritage Collection Luxury Gift Drawer, a 10-piece gift drawer filled with pralines and truffles inspired by classic South African desserts. Think Hertzoggie, Brandy tart, Peppermint Dream, Malva, and Milktart pralines. Delicious!

Chocolates by Tomes

With a flagship store in the V&A Waterfront, Chocolates by Tomes crafts premium African-origin chocolates. Their boutique offers a decadent selection of artisanal confections, including soft nougat, luscious caramels, and rich brownies. For those looking for value, their Blackheath factory shop features a variety of treats, from truffles to oversized slabs, often at discounted prices.

RAPT – The Art of Indulgence

From the team behind TRUTH.Coffee, RAPT is a riotous, rainbow-coloured candyland. Expect bean-to-bar chocolate, hot Choc-O-Lattes from a fountain of liquid Callebaut chocolate, nitrogen-blasted ice cream, and build-your-own chocolate bars. With a healthy dollop of theatrical flair it’s part Wonka, part Warhol. Try the wildly creative ‘Bon Bombs’ by chocolatier Kaylah Greenberg – everything from pomegranate molasses in a lilac log, salted caramel in the shape of a robot, and popcorn ganache in a tiny pink croissant – or book a chocolate-making workshop. Playful, sustainable and oh-so-much fun, RAPT is joy made edible.

Cocoafair

One of Africa’s first bean-to-bar chocolate factories, Cocoafair chocolate is crafted from sustainably sourced Trinitario beans sourced from Panama. While a large portion of their business is in producing high-quality couverture – the bulk slabs used by chefs and other chocolatiers – they also turn out an impressive range of their own chocolate bars, chocolate-coated nuts, chocolate spread and chocolate drinks. Order online, with free delivery for orders over R500! They also have a boutique on Meerendal wine estate.
