Historic Somerset West wine estate Vergelegen has launched a new pop-up restaurant for the winter, built around that timeless flavour combo of great steak and fine red wine.

Dubbed 'Cabernet & Carne', the new dining experience is housed in a rustic restored cottage in a quiet corner of the estate, promising a warm wintry welcome on the chilliest of days. This new meaty pop-up follows in the footsteps of successful riverside and hot-dog-focused pop-ups across the estate.

‘We’re excited to welcome guests to this magical place,’ says Vergelegen managing director Wayne Coetzer. ‘Cabernet & Carne offers far more than a meal; it’s an experience that combines the country charm of our estate with the culinary excellence that Vergelegen is renowned for. Whether you're a foodie, wine enthusiast, or simply searching for an enjoyable winter outing, this pop-up restaurant is the perfect destination.’

With the amphitheatre of Hottentots Holland Mountains as the backdrop, and set on the fringes of the estate’s remarkable arboretum, the setting of Cabernet & Carne is as impressive as the set menu that celebrates seasonal heritage cooking.

And there won’t be any order-envy here, with just a single menu option on offer: a hearty four-course meal, priced at R495 per person. Happily, there are options for vegetarians too.

Homestyle beginning: Ouma’s traditional bean soup with farm bread and Cabernet butter, alternatively a vegetarian bean soup with a mignonette sauce.

Main chapter: Entrecôte steak, or baby spatchcock chicken, or aubergine schnitzel, served with unlimited fries and a green salad.

Delightful end: Old-fashioned souskluitjies – cinnamon dumplings – topped with a crème brûlée custard.

Lekker last sip: Moerkoffie with a splash of condensed milk.

A selection of Vergelegen red and white wines, liqueurs and beverages is available, but are not included in the price of the set menu.

Cabernet & Carne is open for lunch only, from Wednesday to Sunday. Opening hours are from 12pm – 5pm (kitchen closes 3.30pm).
