Our brand-new list of the best cities in the world for food proves that top-quality, flavour-packed and affordable dishes can be found in pretty much every corner of the planet – including in this South African city.

And for once, despite its abundance of international cuisines and the collection of cracking chefs cooking up a storm at Time Out Market, we aren’t actually talking about Cape Town – we’re talking about Johannesburg

That’s right, South Africa’s largest city has been named as the second-best place in the whole world for food, according to the thousands of locals we spoke to about their picks for must-visit restaurants and best-value bites.

And Joburg does have a lot to offer. From local delicacies like the Sowetan kota sandwich (a hollowed-out quarter loaf of bread filled with everything from potato chips to beef patty) to Ethiopian and West African establishments, you can sample food from all over the continent right here.

Headed here soon? Make sure to check out all the live music venues and cool food collabs on rotation in Braamfontein. ‘If Joburg is the soul of South Africa, [this central neighbourhood] is the pulse of the city,’ says Johannesburg food writer Thando Moleketi-Williams, ‘[It’s] home to some of my favourite places to eat, people-watch and dance, with some of the most innovative ventures combining the forces of food and culture.’

Mouth-watering? You can feast your eyes on more info about why Johannesburg, and all the other brilliant entries, earned a place on our list of the best cities in the world for food right here.
