There are many good reasons to add the Paarl Winelands to your Cape Town travels, whether you saddle up for the mountain bike trails on Paarl Mountain, or tap into the region’s burgeoning culinary scene.

When it comes to food and wine, Spice Route Estate was something of a pioneer on the southern slopes of the mountain, offering a smorgasbord of local flavours in a single estate that served up everything from wood-fired pizza and Italian spirits to some of the best craft beers in the Cape.

This summer sees another new addition to Spice Route, with the opening of The Chocolate Room by Beyers.

The Chocolate Room is the brainchild of Kees Beyers, who is also the cocoa-brains behind a pair of tasting counters and stores in Johannesburg, and a range of chocolate creations available nationwide. At Spice Route, The Chocolate Room is firmly focused on bespoke chocolate tastings (from R60 – R100 per person), but you’ll also find indulgent milkshakes and light meals on offer.

The striking new space was designed by Joanne Roelofsz, who blended warm earthy tones with luxurious elements of polished brass and velvet to create a sumptuous space for sweet adventures.

‘Designing The Chocolate Room was about creating a multi-sensory experience that pays homage to cacao's exotic history while aligning with the rich tapestry of The Spice Route’s narrative,’ says Roelofsz.

Tastings at The Chocolate Room are offered until 4.30 pm daily and last approximately 20 minutes.

Here are the best restaurants to dine at in the Cape Winelands.
