The InterContinental hotel brand will be coming to Cape Town in 2025, as IHG Hotels & Resorts – which operates 6383 hotels in more than 100 countries – brings its luxury marque to the Mother City with the signing of InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town.

Set in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront precinct – where you'll also find Time Out Market Cape Town – The Table Bay Hotel rode the crest of the tourism wave as South Africa opened up to international tourism in the late-1990s, with former South African president Nelson Mandela cutting the opening ribbon to a hotel that set the benchmark for world-class hospitality in the Waterfront.

But... by the time the 25-year lease on the property was coming to an end during the Covid pandemic, the hotel was showing its age, with tired furnishings and décor in desperate need of an update.

Happily, that’s on the cards with the Waterfront – which owns the building – investing a cool R1-billion into overhauling the iconic seaside property.

‘We are delighted to see this uniquely located hotel undergo an extensive transformation to re-launch under the prestigious InterContinental brand,” said David Green, CEO of V&A Waterfront.

The refurbishment will create 45 new guest suites, bringing the total number of rooms to 306. The hotel will also feature a new elevated pool bar and terrace, a signature spa, and an Intercontinental Executive Loyalty Club Floor and Lounge. All the reception areas and restaurants will be reimagined.

Sun International, which has run the hotel since 1997, will manage the revamped property under the InterContinental brand. And, as part of IHG’s luxury brands, the InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town will become the latest member of the global IHG One Rewards loyalty program, with more than 130 million members worldwide.

The Table Bay Hotel, in its current guise, is due to close in February 2025, with reopening slated for late-2025.
