Fine food enjoyed al fresco is the name of the game at two brand-new dining destinations that have opened at the Mount Nelson Hotel.
The Fountain by Planet Bar and the Saturday Braai are the work of Executive Chef Luke Lawrence Barry, who joined the hotel in 2024 and brings a wealth of global experience to bear on a culinary experience that celebrates local flavours, authentic dishes and the joy of sharing across the table.
The Fountain by Planet Bar takes the hotel’s acclaimed cocktail bar into new territory, with tables scattered on the terrace around the historic fountain; a feature of the property since 1843, when the estate was still a private home. At The Fountain the vibe is distinctly laid-back, with tables laid beneath scalloped umbrellas, close to the shade of towering trees and dishing up an extra helping of hotel and mountain views.
On the menu, you’ll find a cornucopia of plates heavy on Mediterranean flavours and local producers: think bone marrow from Zuney Wagyu, fresh burrata, house-made charcuterie and artisanal cheeses. Need something more filling? Look to the pork and beef meatballs with fresh bread, West Coast prawn scampi, Saldanha Bay mussels and roasted calamari.
Of course there’s a tempting cocktail menu too. Head Mixologist Jonathan Makonga has created tipples perfectly suited to the garden setting, from the signature Green Goddess to jugs of sangria with summer fruits.
While The Fountain serves up a dash of sophistication, there’s a welcome dose of casual come the weekend, with the Saturday Braai hosted at Oasis. Here tables spill out onto the poolside lawns, and the chefs get to work on adding a Belmond twist to the South African tradition of cooking fine food over flame. You’ll find classic boerie rolls, grills, shellfish and a host of side dishes. Dessert is as traditional as you could ask for, with koeksisters and koesisters, Malva Pudding bites, and nostalgia-laden Peppermint Crisp on offer.
Saturday Braai is open Saturdays from 12pm to 3pm. The Fountain by Planet Bar is open daily from 12pm.
