We love a good food creation here at Time Out Cape Town.
The originality that comes with fusing flavours and classics together is a wonderful thing to see, as it shows that creativity is alive and well within the culinary space. The end product is usually rather tasty, too.
And, no, we are not talking about Dua Lipa's viral ice-cream hack or a peanut butter and gherkin sandwich; we're here for the chefs and bakers who fine tune their creations with care, knowledge and a whole lot of passion.
So you may be wondering where we are going with this?
Well, let us introduce you to Jason Lilley, the owner of Jason Bakery in Green Point and the 'mad scientist' behind the Bunettone - the love child of a hot cross bun and a panettone.

Speaking to Time Out Cape Town, Lilley - who goes by CaptainBreadZA on Instagram - let us in on the idea behind the creation.
"I’m always looking at doing something different, something new, which isn’t easy these days. I was sitting on the yellow bench outside the front of the bakery and thinking that I need to do something different for Easter this year. We have done hot cross bun loaves for the last five years and as we are the only South African bakery that I know of actually making panettone - and it has been a hit - so I thought, why not a panettone x hot cross bun love child...
"The concept is not too out there. They both contain fruit and they are both made over celebratory occasions. So why not? And the Bunettone was born. It's the same sourdough base as our panettone with added warm spices and dried fruits (raisins, currants, sultanas, cranberries and candied citrus peel steeped in apple juices)."

For those keen on giving the Bunettone a try, Lilley advises that you place your order through the bakery's website ahead of time, as they sell out quickly. Alternatively, if you like living life on the edge, you can chance it by visiting Jason Bakery at their Green Point store (83 Main Road, Green Point) during the week or at the Oranjezicht City Farmers Market at the V&A Waterfront on weekends - and don't forget to check out the Time Out Market Cape Town when in the area.
