Acclaimed Cape Town restaurant FYN has cracked the respected World’s 50 Best Restaurants List Top 100 for the fourth time, rising up the ranks from #75 in 2023 to a respectable #60 this year.
In 2023 FYN also walked away with the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award, marking them out as a global leader for sustainability in hospitality.
'I’m so proud of the team and what we’ve accomplished collectively. From our phenomenal suppliers and craftspeople to our network of small-scale farmers, foragers and fermenters, for without all of them FYN wouldn’t be what it is!’ said chef-patron Peter Tempelhoff, who also operates Ramenhead and Sushiya at the Time Out Market Cape Town. ‘This recognition is for all of us; it is for the team as much as it is for me. We’re all absolutely thrilled to have made the list for the fourth time and grateful to 50 Best for once again recognising all we do.’
Since opening in 2018 FYN has dominated Cape Town’s culinary landscape with a curated kaiseki menu that merges South African and Japanese culinary traditions and ingredients to create an utterly unique dining experience. Set in a striking loft-style space in the heart of the city, and with each course plated on bespoke crockery, it’s a visual feast that’s as beautiful as it is delicious.
But here’s the kicker: FYN also offers some of the best-value fine dining the world has to offer!
The full dinner menu experience at FYN currently costs R1975 per person, or $107, with shortened (and cheaper) menu options available for lunch.
FYN clocked in at #60 on the World’s 50 Best List this year... so how much will it cost to eat at other restaurants in this section of the list?
At #59 is Barcelona restaurant Enigma, the work of the world-famous Adrià brothers. Here the tasting menu will set you back €220, or $239. Yikes!
Perhaps you’re paying for the star power of the Adrià brothers as much as the 24-course menu though? Let’s go to Brussels, where in the Art Deco-styled Centre for Fine Arts Bozar – #63 on the list this year – is the hottest table in town. Their menu is a pricey €225 ($245).
At Osaka’s La Cime (#66) a 13-course degustation will set you back ¥35 200, or $224. At New York’s Le Bernardin, clocking in at a ‘lowly’ #71? Expect to hand over $325 for the Chef’s Tasting Menu… and that’s excluding an ‘average’ US tip of 20 percent!
About the only places on the 50 Best List (only #51 to #100 have been announced yet) offering more affordable degustation menus are those in India and South America. At Masque (#78) in Mumbai the tasting menu is an affordable $62, similar in price to New Delhi’s Indian Accent (#89). Nuema, in Quito – trailing FYN at #61 – is priced at $95 for the chef’s menu.
The upshot? FYN dishes up world-class cuisine, at some of the most affordable fine-dining prices on the planet. Expect tables to book up quickly now that the news is out!
