Getting from the Mother City to the wilds of Botswana is about to get easier, as Air Botswana plans a major route expansion across South Africa.

With the arrival in June of three new Embraer regional jets, each carrying up to 50 passengers, the Gaborone-based airline is planning to add a number of new routes into South Africa and Namibia.

Most important is the  return of Air Botswana to the popular Cape Town to Maun route. Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, and direct flights put this World Heritage Site less than three hours from Cape Town. South African airline Airlink already flies this popular route, but more competition usually means lower fares, which is certainly good news for travellers.

Perhaps even more exciting is the planned introduction of direct services from Cape Town to Kasane. Located in the far north-east of Botswana, Kasane is the easiest airport to fly into for travellers wanting to discover the Chobe River and surrounding national park. It’s also just an hour’s drive from Victoria Falls, shared between Zimbabwe and Zambia, meaning you can hop from the Mother City to Mosi-oa-tunya with ease.

Alongside the new routes for Cape Town, Air Botswana is also planning direct flights Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and Durban, along with restarting services from Kasane, Gaborone and Francistown to Johannesburg.
