Ellerman House in Cape Town has been voted the Best City Hotel in Africa in the prestigious Travel + Leisure ‘World’s Best Awards’ 2024

Ellerman House topped the list of Best City Hotels in Africa with an impressive score of 98.20. It was followed by Mount Nelson Hotel (95.15) and Cape Grace (94.95) in Cape Town, the Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa in Johannesburg (94.59) and Giraffe Manor (94.48) in Nairobi, Kenya.

This year is the 29th outing for Travel + Leisure’s annual World’s Best Awards, with more than 186 000 well-travelled readers casting more than 700 000 votes for their favourite hotels, cities, airlines, resorts and more. The Awards are considered one of the most influential in the world of luxury travel.

'We are delighted by this recognition for our ‘home from home’ in South Africa’s ‘Mother City’, and I’d like to thank all of our guests who cast their vote for us, as well as the incredible staff at Ellerman House who put so much passion and energy into making Ellerman House such a memorable destination,’ comments Carol Kohne, CEO of Ellerman House. ‘We know there are so many wonderful luxury hotels for travellers to discover across Africa, but we believe that Ellerman House offers that little something extra that makes for a truly unforgettable stay.’

Perched on the cliffs above Bantry Bay, with jaw-dropping sea views across to Robben Island, Ellerman House has long been a favourite with high-end travellers and jet-setting celebrities who lap up the sense of authentic hospitality coupled with absolute privacy. The hotel offers 13 elegant rooms as well as two ultra-private split-level suites. Beyond the remarkable location, Ellerman House is perhaps most famous for its extensive art collection, displayed throughout the House as well as a dedicated art gallery.

The wide lawns and pool terrace boasting, yes, more sea views are a hit in summer, but in the winter it’s the cosy restaurant or contemporary wine cellar where guests like to hunker down.

The timing of the Award is rather fitting, as Ellerman House has just reopened after a soft refurbishment that updated the décor in private rooms as well as public areas. The spa also now includes a ‘Polar Plunge’ pool for fans of cold-water immersion. And, of course, Ellerman House tops the Time Out list of the Best Hotels in Cape Town.

Aside from the gong for Best City Hotel in Africa, Ellerman House was also the only South African city hotel to make it into the top 100 in the influential annual awards. Ellerman House came in at #60, with other South African properties on that list including Monwana Game Lodge in the Thornybush Game Reserve (#28), Lion Sands Game Reserve (#73) and Thornybush Game Lodge (#80).
