As the largest timed cycle race in the world, nearly 30 000 cyclists will take to the streets of the Mother City on Sunday, March 9, 2025, tackling both the full 109-kilometer route to Cape Point, as well as the shorter 42-kilometer that runs along the 'Blue Route' (M3 freeway) and back.
With that many bikes thronging the streets, the highways and byways across much of the city will come to a standstill for traffic on Sunday. And in parts of the city and Atlantic seaboard, where the start and finish lines and rider chutes will be set up, the roads will be off-limits to cars from as early as Saturday.
So, if you're wondering where the road closures for the Cape Town Cycle Tour will be and where to avoid? You've come to the right place!
Although the full list is a bit long to post here, you can find the finer details on this handy PDF from the Cycle Tour. But the most important road closures to look out for are:
Saturday, March 8
- CBD: the streets surrounding the Grand Parade (including Castle, Darling, Caledon, and Strand) are closed from Saturday afternoon until Sunday lunchtime
- Green Point: Helen Suzman Boulevard from Beach Road to the traffic circle (towards the city) closed from Saturday 2pm until Sunday night
- Chapmans Peak Drive: closed to all traffic from Saturday 6pm until Sunday 6pm
Sunday, March 9
- CBD: extensive closures in the center affecting Loop, Long, Somerset, Darling, Adderley and Lower Plein streets, from 4am – 4pm.
- M3 (Blue Route): lanes closed in both directions from the city to the Muizenberg off-ramp, varying between 5.30am – 3pm. The freeway will be reopened in both directions by 3pm.
- Main Road, False Bay: road closure in parts from 5.45am until as late as 2pm
- Cape Point – Kommetjie-Noordhoek: M6/M65 closed in parts from 6.45am – 2pm
- Chapmans Peak Drive will be closed to all traffic from Saturday 6pm until Sunday 6pm
- Victoria Road (M6), Hout Bay/Camps Bay: closure in parts from 7am to as late as 6pm (towards Bantry Bay)
Additional closures will take place on the route and at the finish in Green Point. Please consult the complete guide to Cape Town Cycle Tour road closures for full details.
And while some drivers may grumble at the road closures and diversions, it's one weekend a year that puts the city on the global cycling map. Plan your route, pack a little extra patience and maybe even get out there and support the pedallers.
