Sorry Sydney. Tough luck, Tokyo. Better luck next time, Bangkok.
After being named Time Out's Best City in the World 2025 , the Mother City has triumphed again, with influential British consumer magazine Which? naming Cape Town Best Long-Haul City Break in a survey that polled travelers across a number of metrics ranging from accommodation and quality of its cultural attractions to food and drink. And in a world grappling with overtourism, they also asked travelers to factor in a 'lack of crowds'.
While Japan bagged two spots in the top five, thanks largely to a weaker Yen making the country more affordable, Cape Town's vibrant restaurant scene, natural beauty and excellent value-for-money saw it claim the top spot. Following Cape Town at #1 was Kyoto (#2), Sydney (#3), Chicago (#4) and Tokyo (#5).
Out of dozens of cities rated, Cape Town was one of the few cities receiving five stars for its culinary offering, while the diversity of cultural attractions – hello Zeitz MOCAA! – and glorious scenery clinched the wine for Cape Town. About the only metric the city fell short on was the 'Ease of getting around'.
Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel summed it up: 'Some cities are one-trick ponies, but the standout destinations in this year's survey have it all – each offering unique cultural sights, top-class food and drink, and even sublime scenery.'
'What makes Cape Town so special is that it's not just a place to visit – it's a place to experience,' commented James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth. 'One minute, you're hiking up Lion's Head; the next, you're sipping award-winning wine in Durbanville; and by evening, you're enjoying fresh seafood with an ocean view. The best part? It contributes directly to our local economy, creating thousands of jobs and stimulating growth. You can do it all and still have room in your pocket for more!'
