Just 20 minutes from the city centre, the Durbanville Wine Valley is one of the closest wine destinations to Cape Town, drawing no end of local tourists and wine-loving tourists.
While the offbeat Durbanville Wine Safari is one of the best ways to explore the area, be sure to set aside time for a bite at the latest culinary offering: the Wilde Vy Bistro on Hooggelegen Farm, home of Signal Gun Wines.
The new bistro is the creation of South African chef Jürgen Snyman and Ghanaian entrepreneurs Kwasi Osei-Kusi and Charles Bucknor, who bring together decades of experience in the worlds of food and hospitality.
Snyman is certainly no stranger to Cape foodies. With more than 25 years behind the pass, he was recently the culinary brains behind the experience at ever-popular inner-city eateries Kloof Street House, Asoka and Egghead.
At Wilde Vy Bistro Snyman offers plenty of choice for hungry diners, with a wide-ranging menu that runs from Small Plates and a Raw offering to meaty plates from the Fire Grill and a dedicated Kiddies menu.
The thread binding them together is a subtle blending of local and global flavours, with plenty of bistro creativity thrown in. Think line fish with bok choi off the grill. Côte de boeuf alongside smoked aubergine and black garlic. Duck liver parfait will be a hit on cooler Autumn days, while the citrus-cured Overberg trout and ajo blanco is a sure-fire hit in summer.
Set around the eponymous wild fig, expect a blend of al fresco dining amid the Winelands and cosy bistro interiors for wintry days. Indoors, the décor taps into the heritage of Hooggelegen Farm; preserving key architectural while leaning into the organic tones and textures of the landscape.
Wilde Vy Bistro is open Monday to Friday from 12pm-9pm, and 10am-9pm on weekends.
