At first glance, IPA beer shows a pale amber color. When you bring the glass closer, you’ll notice citrus and herbal aromas. Tasting it, the bitterness is distinctive, coming from the double hops used in its production. To balance this, different malts add body and a final hint of sweetness.

Perhaps its balance, freshness, and bitter but non-astringent taste are some of the reasons why India Pale Ale (IPA) is one of the most popular beers in Argentina and around the world today. So much so that it has its own day: since 2011, every first Thursday in August, IPA Day is celebrated with discounts and promotions worldwide.

Among all IPAs, the Imperial IPA stands out for its unique Clean Label recipe, meaning all its ingredients are natural, with no preservatives or chemical additives.

Where Was IPA Beer Born?

While there are different theories, it’s said that IPA was created in the 18th century when the British transported their beers by ship to their colonies. “IPA is thought to have been created by increasing the alcohol levels and adding more hops, which would help preserve the beer on longer journeys,” according to the Taste Atlas food guide.

If we wanted to trace a timeline, the boom for this beer style grew alongside the rise of craft brewing. New brands emerged, new varieties were experimented with, and consumers’ palates became more refined, choosing more complex styles that require diverse ingredients.

Alongside IPA, other styles emerged, such as:

  • American Pale Ale (ALE): a milder, less bitter, but drier style;
  • Red Amber Ale: with low bitterness, citrus hops, and a strong caramel malt presence;
  • Golden-colored Lager: with a fruity aroma and fresh flavor;
  • And Porter: dark-colored, with roasted flavor notes of walnut and caramel.

How to Pair an IPA Beer

Opening an Imperial IPA can be a true ritual, and as with any ritual, there are certain tips to enhance the experience. For example, the ideal temperature for this type of beer is between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius to allow the hops’ intensity to shine. It’s also recommended to serve it in a wide-mouth glass so the aromas are instantly noticeable.

As for pairings, its bitterness goes perfectly with dishes that have spicy and bold flavors. It also pairs well with fatty foods like fried and breaded dishes, grilled meats, or bitter vegetables. Some examples: curry chicken, grilled cheese with chimichurri, Caesar salad, barbecue burger, Provençal asparagus, or artichokes with garlic, parsley, and olive oil.

Finally, as for occasions, it’s the perfect beer for any moment: the pre-barbecue gathering, a Sunday snack, or a beer with friends after a hard day at work. It’s a refreshing, bitter, and light beer that’s here to stay.
