You’ve probably been having many spontaneous get-togethers with friends, year-end parties, and work team meetings these days. We’ve already told you why the freezer is NOT the best option for cooling beer: it freezes, loses its flavor, and its carbonation.

However, since we don’t want you to get frustrated if this happens, we’re going to tell you what to do if your Imperial cans froze. First, keep in mind that it has likely already lost some of its flavor and structure, but we can follow a few steps to prevent it from getting worse.

How to defrost frozen beer?

Submerging it in hot water is not a good idea. The yeast and bacteria used in its production can multiply in warm environments and cause the can to explode due to the sudden temperature change.

We also don’t recommend doing it under a running tap because it may cause the carbonation to escape, resulting in a very watered-down drink. This is something we want to avoid because an ideal Imperial should be served with at least two fingers of foam – here’s the lowdown on foam in beer – and enjoyed for its different flavors: the Roja, with its caramel taste and fruity aroma; the IPA, with its bitterness and citrus scent; the APA, with its very refreshing hop flavor.

Unlike the tips we gave you for cooling it, which may take about 10 minutes, the best way to defrost beer is through slow processes. One option is to place your cans or bottles in a container of cold water: the temperature difference will allow them to defrost slowly without losing too many properties. This is an ideal solution if you're preparing your cooler for one of the summer plans we recommend in Buenos Aires.

However, the best option is to take it out of the freezer and place it in the fridge. While it’s a slow process that might take a whole night, it’s the best because it will help the beer retain the properties it still has. Another recommendation: once defrosted, don’t refreeze it. I assure you that the flavor will be completely different from the original.

If you prefer not to drink a beer that may be lacking carbonation or isn’t at its ideal point, the best option is to use it for cooking or making different cocktails by mixing it with other ingredients and beverages.

The main idea of this time of year is simple: enjoy – with friends, family, gatherings, and, of course, a few cans of Imperial, with all the flavor and aroma of each of its styles.
