The summer theater season lifts the curtain, and the country's three most important theater cities—Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, and Carlos Paz—reinforce their leadership with options for all types of audiences. This year, several well-established productions are moving to Argentina’s most popular tourist destinations, while others bring fresh proposals and formulas that will surely captivate the public.

Musical theater, drama, but mostly comedy, with "affordable" prices, will provide the perfect entertainment. After a day at the beach, by the river, or family games, or even for those still waiting for their vacation while at work, there's always room to change pace and dive into a diverse and varied theater offering.

1. Mamma Mia!

Starring Florencia Peña, who once again shows her talent for musical theater, this classic production directed by Ricky Pashkus proves that the quality and professionalism of local artists can easily compete with Broadway or London's performances.

The unforgettable songs of the Swedish group ABBA—arguably the most famous group of all time—tell a story where identity and feminine strength unfold before the audience. With accessible prices, Malena Ratner, Alejandra Perlusky, Lula Rosenthal, Alejandro Parker, and El Purre, among others, share their charisma and talent on stage, set in an idyllic Greek island.

Note: Mamma Mia! has already had successful seasons in Carlos Paz and Buenos Aires.

Where: Since December 6 at the Teatro Mar del Plata, Av. Pedro Luro 2335, Mar del Plata. Tickets here.

2. ¿Quién es quién?

Without a doubt, ¿Quién es quién? is one of the theatrical events of the year, starring Soledad Silveyra and Luis Brandoni. Audrey Schebat's play, directed by Héctor Díaz, is a celebration that allows each actor to showcase their skills, especially in comedy.

A long-time couple, burdened by routine, begins to air their grievances before a dinner with friends, inevitably affecting the entire event. Produced by Tomás Rottemberg and Juan Manuel Caballé, the play operates with the precision of the finest clockwork.

Note: This is the first time Silveyra and Brandoni share a stage.

Where: From January 8 at Teatro Liceo, Av. Rivadavia 1999, CABA. Tickets here.

3. Un viaje en el tiempo

For almost 15 years, Pedro Alfonso has led the summer theater ticket sales in Córdoba. With his company, which includes his wife Paula Chaves and several popular performers, he offers a simple story that showcases the talents of everyone involved.

Exaggerated and physical, Pedro shines while giving space for others to shine or simply engaging with the audience. After the play ends, another performance begins—his connection and interaction with the crowd, creating a unique space of humor and fun. This time, Un viaje en el tiempo will deliver the most absurd situations. Alfonso and Chaves are joined by Pachu Peña, Viviana Saccone, Sebastián Almada, and Noelia Marzol.

Note: This marks Pedro Alfonso's 14th season in the Cordoba mountains, with success and his family growing alongside it.

Where: From December 25 at Teatro del Lago, Belgrano 81, Carlos Paz. Tickets here.

4. ¿Qué de magnífico tiene ser yo?

In this play, the bed is the central element of the universe, allowing Zoe Di Rienzo to expand her theory on life in a horizontal position, based on the story of her grandmother, who, during the bubonic plague in the 17th century, sparked a true revolution from her sickbed.

5. Brujas

The definitive farewell of Brujas, an unmissable local theater classic, featuring stars like Moria Casán, Nora Cárpena, Graciela Dufau, Luisa Kuliok, and María Leal.

The play premiered on January 3, 1991, at the Teatro Atlas, the same theater it returns to this summer. It became a phenomenon, exposing the misery of a group of former schoolmates who, during a supposed celebration, end up revealing the worst things about each other. With several original cast members, this is the last chance to see them on stage.

Note: The Spanish play by Santiago Moncada sparked a wave of female-driven productions like Porteñas, Acaloradas, Mujeres Soñadas, and Monólogos de la vagina.

Where: At Teatro Atlas, Av. Luro y Corrientes, Mar del Plata. Tickets here.

6. Exit

A renewed cast—featuring Romina Richi, Dan Breitman, and Laura Cymer—for Exit, a successful play that was a hit in Buenos Aires. A new human resources manager must make a drastic decision after meeting two long-time employees, who start competing for the position. A hilarious comedy that analyzes the tyranny of work relationships in an increasingly demanding market, all while offering a game for the audience to figure out who’s really who in the office.

Note: Directed by Corina Fiorillo, this well-executed play elicits laughter in every scene.

Where: Teatro Candilejas 1, Pje. Niní Marshall 75, Carlos Paz. Tickets here.

7. Escape Room

What if, with a group of friends, you get locked in an escape room and dark secrets begin to surface? One of the big hits of the 2024 season, Escape Room renews its cast with two new performers who will undoubtedly captivate the audience with their talent and charisma. Agustín Sullivan and Cande Molfese join the cast, alongside Brenda Gandini and Gonzalo Suárez, to both entertain and intelligently make the audience reflect on the limits of humor and how appearances often deceive.

Note: Alan Sabbagh shares the stage virtually, adding more humor to the production.

Where: From January 10 at Teatro Multitabarís Comafi, Av. Corrientes 831, CABA. Tickets here.

8. Empieza con D Siete Letras

After the success of Parque Lezama—which will soon be made into a movie—Juan José Campanella returns to direct a play where opposites attract. Eduardo Blanco and Fer Metilli play a retired doctor and a yoga teacher who, on the surface, have nothing in common. But as in the author’s imagination, this duo might just be the perfect couple, as Campanella has proven in unforgettable works like El mismo amor y la misma lluvia. A heartwarming story of love and transformation, with Argentine DNA at its core. Written by Cecilia Monti and Juan José Campanella.

9. Antígona en el baño

From the pen of Verónica Llinas, the tragedy of Antigone is reimagined as a wacky comedy that focuses on a star who locks herself in the bathroom to avoid going on stage. The play reveals the backstage of building a successful persona, one who, as always, has to rely on her therapist to overcome it.

In Antígona en el baño, Llinás plays a woman overwhelmed who can only calm down with food, therapy, and reflection on her toxic relationship with her assistant. The audience embarks on a rollercoaster of emotions until the final applause. Héctor Díaz and Darío Lopilato also star.

Note: After Esteban Lamothe left the project, the play revived with Lopilato's addition.

Where: From January 4 at Roxy Centro de Arte, San Luis 1750, Mar del Plata. Tickets here.

10. Planeta Gasalla

The unmistakable talent and greatest creations of Antonio Gasalla in a unique show celebrating him like never before. Music and characterizations to honor a cultural icon, who, since the 1970s, cultivated his unique style, avoiding censorship and humorously saying things no one else dared. Diego Sebastián Oria wrote and directed this celebration, featuring all the most memorable characters in Gasalla's iconic legacy.

Note: Planeta Gasalla previously performed at Palacio Libertad (ex CCK), and this is its first time in Córdoba.

Where: Mondays to Wednesdays at Teatro Libertad, Av. Libertad 70, Carlos Paz. Tickets here.

11. El Equilibrista and El Amateur

Mauricio Dayub is a master of theater, and with these two plays, he shows it season after season, with the public returning even after they've seen the performances before.

Though they are two different pieces—one solo, El Equilibrista, and the other with Juan Luppi, El Amateur—both talk not only about Argentina but also about close relationships, values, and memories. The great artist opens his heart with every performance, and this time, his two most celebrated works will be presented in the same theaters.

Note: Dayub returns to Mar del Plata with this double bill after a successful year in Buenos Aires and touring across the country.
