Devoto: 12 must-visit places to explore the neighborhood's gastronomic boom

The best restaurants and cafés in a Buenos Aires area that keeps growing.

Advertising

There was a time when Buenos Aires’ restaurant scene was concentrated in the Center, Recoleta, and Palermo. Today, each neighborhood has its own gastronomic hub, and Devoto's has developed uniquely. In fact, this neighborhood was chosen by Time Out as the standout of 2024 due to the quality and quantity of its offerings.

It’s a part of the city that blends an organic real estate boom with the tranquility and beauty of its low-rise houses and tree-lined streets. As a result, its little streets feature projects for all tastes and budgets: bodegones, traditional and modern pizzerias, fine dining, patisseries, bakeries, specialty coffee, and much more. It’s an area worth visiting to experience the city as many locals do. To learn more about Devoto, follow Visit Bue.

1. Ávito Bistró & Café

The list begins with this flagship spot, the big neighborhood opening of 2024. Housed in a convent, the structure was preserved and harmonized with a very well-thought-out interior design. Ávito blends the concepts of a café and bistro.

Chef Julio Figueroa’s cuisine recreates the homely flavors of traditional Argentine tables, adjusting the menu to seasonal ingredients. The menu is short but varied, with small and medium plates that change frequently. For breakfast and tea time, there's an excellent selection of laminated pastries and handmade bakery items.

Tip: The weekend brunch includes the innovative concept of all-you-can-drink beverages.

Location: Pareja 3670.

2. Mecha

Mercedes Street in Villa Devoto has a strong gastronomic presence, and Mecha holds a leading spot in the area. Known for having ex-soccer player Rifle Pandolfi as one of its owners, the project has consolidated as a parrilla and contemporary kitchen.

It’s a spacious place with good layout, industrial aesthetics, and a greenhouse that functions as a climate control for any season. The classic dish to order is the flank steak milanesa and halloumi provoleta, two examples of how they reinvent classics.

Tip: Try the risotto milanese with a six-hour braised osso buco. It might be heavy for hot days, but it's definitely worth it.

Location: Mercedes 3939.

3. Casa Lucca

Set in a cleverly remodeled mansion, Casa Lucca sits on the corner of Fernández de Enciso and Asunción, offering a wide parrilla experience that opens from breakfast until tea time.

Falling into the “immigrant kitchen” category, it operates within the modern bodegón concept. The menu features parrilla classics, such as supreme Maryland-style and breaded hake. Their pasta offerings, like carbonara, pesto, and bolognese, are reliable crowd-pleasers.

Tip: They don’t charge for cover. The twelve-egg flan with cream and dulce de leche is a must-try dessert.

Location: Asunción 4167.

4. 4ta Pared

Probably the priciest option on this list, but it’s worth mentioning as the only fine dining restaurant in Villa Devoto with a 2024 Michelin Guide mention.

Chef Pablo Cerne chose a classic approach for this fine-dining establishment: a contemporary tasting menu. The kitchen is open, offering a view of every step (the name 4ta Pared refers to breaking the “fourth wall” concept from theater).

5. Raíx

Raíx is the neighborhood's most innovative project, combining a beautiful dining space within a massive old bakery, organized as a cooperative. The menu is divided by the number of bites each dish includes, allowing for better portion control.

Chef Julián Díaz and his partnership with chef Hernán Sondereguer bring haute cuisine with a porteño and Latin twist.

Tip: The bread basket is a tribute to the former bakery that occupied the space.

Location: Asunción 4405.

6. Buche Salumeria

Another project by Julio Figueroa (the same chef from Ávito), Buche is a brand-new concept that opened in January 2025. The focus is on creating a space to relax, rather than a formal dining experience.

Operating as a “salumeria” (artisan deli), Buche offers three areas: a bar with products to take away, a rooftop, and a restaurant serving small plates and sandwiches with fresh, homemade ingredients. They have an excellent selection of vermouth and amaro to complement the “drunch” concept, a mix of merienda, snacks, and dinner.

Tip: Their cheese and cured meat platters are top-notch and a highlight of the menu.

Location: Asunción 4085.

7. Pepe di Roma

A recent addition to the neighborhood, Pepe di Roma offers a fresh take on Italian cuisine with a modern twist on both appetizers and pasta. The restaurant has a sleek, modern design, aligning with the aesthetic of its neighbor Betular Patisserie.

Their ciabatta with a tasting of preserves is an original and delightful dish. The cannoli al funghi and their open-kitchen pasta preparations are an artistic take on modern Italian cuisine.

Tip: If there was a route for affogato in Buenos Aires, this would be a mandatory stop.

Location: Av. Francisco Beiró 3701.

8. Bar Alemán

A classic in Villa Devoto with over 100 years of history. Known for its hearty, generous dishes, “El Alemán” is a German-inspired bodegón with a mix of international dishes, typical of old-school porteño gastronomy.

From fried calamari to German sausage with sauerkraut, and goulash with gnocchi, the menu has something for everyone. The experience is always lively and fun, and the staff knows each dish and can make great recommendations.

Tip: The super-sized banana split is an Instagram-worthy dessert that's tough to finish. A nostalgic time machine.

Location: San Martín 5992.

9. Café de García

You can’t make a guide to Villa Devoto without mentioning the historic Café García, a spot nearly as famous as Segurola and Habana. This bar dates back to 1927, and despite its ups and downs, it has reopened with a fresh look while maintaining its original spirit.

The iconic menu of tapas, prepared in front of the customers, now also includes a selection of popular dishes.

Tip: Every Maradona fan visiting Devoto has to try the “ojo de bife Maradona” (Maradona’s rib-eye steak).

Location: Sanabria 3302.

10. Compadre Bike & Coffee

In line with the times, Devoto now has several specialty coffee shops, and Compadre stands out for being one of those hidden gems that's worth the search. Situated near the train tracks, the experience here is all about slowing down and enjoying the moment.

The menu changes with the seasons, but the “palta pan” (forget avocado toast) and fainá with multiple toppings are fan favorites. For something sweet, their cinnamon rolls are a must.

Tip: It's not a pizzeria, but they serve pizza, and it's definitely worth trying—only at night.

Location: Mosconi 4300.

11. Gran Pizzería José

Alongside Café García, Gran Pizzería José is another gastronomic emblem of the neighborhood, with over 80 years of history. Known for its classic style and massive, cheese-loaded pizzas.

The standout is the large fugazzeta pizza with ham, and the pepperoni pizza comes in second. Definitely worth visiting at least twice to try their fried cheese and onion empanadas and their blue cheese empanadas (no, it’s not blue cheese, it’s roquefort).

Tip: Few know that the legendary "Pizza Conmigo" video by Alfredo Casero and his son Nazareno was filmed here.

Location: Av. San Martín 6915.

12. Betular Pâtisserie

The list ends with Damián Betular, the neighborhood's new ambassador. Before becoming a TV and streaming star, Betular made his name in premium hospitality. He uses his well-earned fame to support his exquisite patisserie, which has become a huge hit.

The store features a monochrome design and a long display case resembling a jewelry store. Betular Pâtisserie is known for offering the finest chocolates in the city.

Tip: Go early and enjoy breakfast at one of their sidewalk tables—perfect for a sunny morning before the heat sets in.

Location: Mercedes 3900.
