Argentina has a long-standing comic book tradition. In Latin America, it has been the leading force in the ninth art, and worldwide, it has been one of its main representatives, with a unique identity distinct from European styles, North American comics, and Japanese manga. Since the early 20th century, graphic humor has had a special place in national culture, especially with its introduction in the Caras y Caretas magazine, and comics have appeared in various publications, from the legendary Fierro magazine, a landmark in the field, to children’s magazines like Billiken and Anteojito. Not to mention, the country has been the birthplace of major comic book figures like Dante Quinterno, Hugo Pratt, and Héctor Oesterheld, and Buenos Aires was home to René Goscinny, the creator of French comic classics like Asterix and Lucky Luke.

This interest has naturally led to the emergence of numerous specialized comic stores throughout the city. With Argentina Comic Con approaching (December 6-8 at Centro Costa Salguero), here are the best comic book stores in Buenos Aires.

1. La Revistería

La Revistería is the largest comic book chain in Buenos Aires, with several branches in Microcentro, Flores, and Belgrano, and even expanding to Greater Buenos Aires and Córdoba province.

Starting in the 90s as a magazine kiosk, it grew to become the market leader with its vast collection of anime (around 8,000 items), comics, graphic novels, and collectibles. The setting, featuring life-sized sculptures of characters like Batman and C-3PO, attracts fans of all kinds.

The flagship store on Florida Street won the “Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Awards 2019,” an award given at the San Diego Comic Con to recognize the best comic book stores worldwide. The space is huge and has a café where you can spend entire afternoons reading.

Fun fact: the first La Revistería store opened at Galería Apolo (Avenida Corrientes 1384), where Camelot, possibly the city’s most important comic book store, operated until 2010. Ideal for nostalgia.
