The best cheap hotels in Bristol

An affordable hotel doesn’t mean you need to end up in the back-and-beyond of town. This well-loved hotel is located in Clifton Village, home to a thousand bijou cafes, restaurants and independent shops. In fact, when there’s so much to splash the cash on in the area around you, it’s great to know that The Rodney Hotel can be a good place to snap up a cheaper-than-average room (note: prices fluctuate throughout the year according to demand). Take advantage of their secluded garden to recharge in and, of course, spend an unholy amount of time taking in those nearby suspension bridge views.

Channings might not look like all that much on the outside but it’s in a great location (sandwiched in between Whiteladies Road and Clifton Village), has a friendly atmosphere and - crucially - is somewhere you can get a room for a decent rate. The bar downstairs is popular with locals – especially when there’s sport to be watched – and has had a nice spruce-up in recent times. The rooms are clean, comfortable and reasonably sized. What’s not to like?

It may not be the most conveniently located hotel in Bristol, but it's a lovely, cosy countrified place to stay - so who's complaining? Extra points for the fact it's relatively close to the airport but is miles nicer than your average 'airport hotel'. Enjoy bucolic views of the countryside and a hearty full English in the morning. Job done.

The elegant exterior of this handsome Victorian villa set on a Georgian square in leafy Clifton is matched inside by its cute-and-cosy rooms with views over the square. The high-ceilinged rooms are en suite and feature free wifi, flatscreen TVs, and tea- and coffee-making facilities, but don't forget that you're only a minute's walk across the square to some of Clifton's best brunch spots.

Fancy pretending you’re a member of the aristocracy? This highly affordable nineteenth-century redbrick villa could just be the place. It’s set amid an 18-acre stretch of woodland and landscaped gardens, and has 14 traditional and individually-styled rooms. They feature ornate furniture, rich textiles, and opulent marble bathrooms with heated mosaic floors, some with clawfoot, free-standing tubs and fireplaces. Bizarrely, this is also a location where you can nab the occasional bargain - so keep your eyes peeled, especially if you're booking a decent amount in advance.

Arnos Manor Hotel is another venue which takes you slightly outside of the city centre – but with good reason. Its lush, landscaped gardens offer a counterbalance to the on-it vibes of the city centre and the gothic exterior of the building might just get you in the mood for a walk around the nearby Arnos Vale Cemetery (trust us, it’s a local gem). You're a little bit of a walk from the centre but you can get a lovely room here for a very reasonable rate.

The Wellington has that design blend of old and new that so many hotels attempt and so few succeed with, and it pulls it off perfectly. The rooms aren’t the largest in the world, but it’s a fantastic setting with a great bar to kick back in, all situated just outside Bristol’s city centre and often bookable for a not-so-shabby price.

Another affordable hotel in a Grade A location, The Regency is surrounded by Clifton Village, Whiteladies Road and the hustle and bustle of Park Street. The added bonus is the heated shisha bar, where guests are welcome to unwind with friends while quietly enjoying the lovely aromas of scented tobacco. Mmmm….

This pretty little hotel resides in a Georgian townhouse close to Clifton Village. If its own changing displays of artworks get you in the mood, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and the RWA are just a short stroll away. Prices are reasonable for fresh and fuss-free rooms with free wi-fi, a decanter of sherry, tea and coffee-making facilities, fruit and homemade biscuits. Guests also have access to a members’ club with a pretty cocktail bar in the basement, and a breezy restaurant with outdoor terrace.
