Bristol Harbour has played a significant role in the growth and prosperity of the city for centuries. Today the port is no longer used for commercial trade but it's still one of Bristol's most desirable destinations for an unbeatable combination food, drink, entertainment and arts.

True, the Waterfront late on a Friday or Saturday night might not be for everyone, but for the most part it's a focal point for a whole load of fun. It also looks rather lovely through a lens, which is why we have rounded up this collection of great pictures.

So here are some reminders why we enjoy any chance to head to the Floating Harbour.

...because it's where you'll find a replica of The Matthew, the boat that discovered North America. Yeah, up yours Columbus.

...because you'll find a great big whale sculpture in Millennium Square made out of willow and plastic bottles recovered from a 10k run. If you hang around long enough, it'll scare the crap out of you by firing a huge jet of air out its blowhole.

...because these cranes outside the M Shed are a landmark to remind us of the harbour's working past. Oh, and you can ride in them this October too

...because a stone's throw away in Hanover Place on Spike Island you'll find 'The Girl with the Pierced Eardrum' by Banksy, before he started taking the Mickey out of Disney.

...because of the boats, of course. We'll never be able to afford one, though.

...because there's a massive shiny planetarium (next to the whale), which you can go inside and learn about the stars.

...because, when we do get fireworks, Bristol Harbourside looks particularly smashing.
