Brisbane Writers Festival will soon be upon us once again, and another exciting festival year brings with it a new country of focus: South Korea. For the second year running, BWF’s Country of Focus program will shine a light on the dynamic literature of the Indo-Pacific region, and this year South Korean authors and illustrators are taking to the stage.

From May 10-14, the State Library of Queensland will play host to extraordinary South Korean talents and stories. The line-up features children’s book authors Gihun Lee and JiHyeon Lee as well as key Korean literary voices Choi Eunyoung, Krys Lee, Lee Young-ju and Bae Suah. The acclaimed Bora Chung, whose collection of sci-fi short stories Cursed Bunny was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2022, will appear in conversation.

These events will highlight stories that are universal yet particular and they promise to remind us of the enduring power of literature across borders.

This year’s Country of Focus program is produced in partnership with the Korean Cultural Centre Australia, the Australia-Korea Foundation and the Literature and Translation Institute of Korea. Tickets will cost you $10-$35 and you can book online at the Brisbane Writers Festival website.
