Driving along Stanley Street towards the Gabba, you're not even gong to notice an awesome seafood joint right there by the side of the road near the BP. Cruelly, council won't let the Barra Boys erect a noticeable sign, so you may not even know they're here. Talk about the one that got away.
It's a Greek-inflected, open-air, totally awesome fish and chippery, with daily fresh fish available by the kilo as well. Grab a table and get your catch in a Rod-and-Reel Combo, which includes chips, salad and tartare sauce. Have it grilled, battered or crumbed, and expect a nice plump piece, moist and satisfying. They are licenced, so you can have a beer, wine or cider with that (make ours a Mythos Hellenic lager) and sit under an umbrella and watch the traffic go by. A fridge full of Delizia gelato and sorbet means dessert is sorted too.
Otherwise known as the Australian seabass, barramundi is rightfully king of the menu here, in all its muddy deliciousness. But they always have cod, whiting, sea perch, snapper, salmon, calamari, barbecued octopus and prawns on skewers too. Specials might include a bug roll or fish tacos, and burger fans are well served by the menu of beef classics alongside the obligatory Barra Boys crumbed fillet burger.
It may be relegated to a local secret but the Barra Boys is absolutely worth crossing town for. There's plenty of customer parking out back, and plenty of lip-smacking choice for all lovers of Neptune's bounty.
