Ipswich Art Gallery is one of Australia's most popular regional galleries, with more than 100,000 visitors streaming through the doors every year. Its popularity is no doubt partly due to the gallery's terrific program for families and children, including the country's first permanent interactive gallery space dedicated to children under 12.
Of course you don't have to be a kid to enjoy Ipswich Art Gallery. The building (which began as a Mechanics’ School of Art back in 1861) regularly hosts engaging exhibtions that explore both the visual arts and social history. Artists represented in the permanent collection include Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Bill Henson, Patricia Piccinini, Margaret Olley and James Angus.
Call or check the website before leaving home; Ipswich Art Gallery occasionally closes to bump in new exhibitions.
