Time Out says

Boston was the first city in the country to offer this alcohol-free alternative to ringing in the New Year. Launched in 1976, First Night is celebrated citywide, with over 1,000 artists and 200 exhibitions at nearly 40 venues. Events range from poetry readings to rock concerts. There are activities from noon, but the fun really starts in the early evening with the carnival-style Grand Procession in Back Bay, culminating in a midnight fireworks display at the harbor. The massive ice sculptures in Copley Square and on the Common are another signature feature.
