When the family-owned bakery went on an extended hiatus for more than a year in 2013, waistlines shrank as anxiety levels rose. The 80-year-old East Boston institution has comforted multiple generations with its yeasty cake rings, crullers and warm jelly donuts and jelly-filled donut holes. And unlike the artisan donuts found in other parts of the city, these suckers cost well under a dollar apiece.
