What are the Swan Boats in Boston?

If you’re new to the area, or just never spent much time thinking about the Swan Boats, we’re happy to fill you in. The boats are a uniquely Boston experience set in the Public Garden, the country’s first public botanical garden. Since 1877, the lovely paddlewheel boats – operated and owned by the Paget family – have provided locals and visitors a delightful respite from the buzz of the city. This is the swan boat fleet’s 146th year operating in the Boston Public Garden, and each boat weighs about three tons. They're built on oak-framed pontoons covered in copper, and are powered by a driver using a paddle wheel they operate by foot. The driver is hidden on both sides by the titular swan, while passengers sit on covered wooden benches.
