Labor Day Weekend in Boston is filled with cookouts, beach days and lots of moving trucks. The last one may be a surprise to you if you are new to the city, but what may be even more of a surprise is that all of a sudden, your social media feed is filled with a phenomenon called “Storrowing.”

Why are there so many moving trucks right now?

September 1 is the busiest moving day in Boston due to all the students looking for rentals on a school-year calendar. This creates the need for lots of moving trucks, which then creates the need for people to all of a sudden fit their whole lives into that moving truck. Oftentimes those lives do not fit in said truck, which leads to another local event called “Allston Christmas.” This weekend you will see couches, chairs, tables and an assortment of all other household items on the street corners in the college neighborhoods around the city. Basically, we have a city-wide giveaway of unwanted goods throughout Boston for the next few days. (I also hear that Facebook marketplace is full of deals at the moment.)

What is Storrowing?

You have also probably noticed something called “Storrowing” clogging up your newsfeeds this week. Storrowing occurs when people do not heed the low bridge warnings on Storrow Drive and the top of their U-Haul gets sliced off, causing traffic jams, general mayhem and hopefully no injuries.

There have already been several confirmed Storrowing’s this season and I am sure they won’t be the last. With September 1 right around Labor Day this year, we will probably see a lot of people saving the big move for the weekend.
