Today is the big day, it is Marathon Monday in Boston and there are thousands of runners, visitors and spectators in the city today. However, lots of roads are shut and the T is running a little differently today. So, keep reading so your plans aren’t interrupted, and you don’t miss seeing your friends and family cross the finish line. You will also want to check out our full guide to the Boston Marathon and the Marathon Route so you can enjoy Marathon Monday at its fullest.

Boston Marathon road closures

Remember, the Marathon starts in Hopkinton and runs all the way into Boston, so there are road closures all along the route, with a gradual reopening as the runners move through the race.

Traffic changes and road closures are expected along the race route, with reopenings based on a 14:23-mile pace. Refer to the BAA for all the town-by-town closures, but expect severe delays in each town during these time frames on Marathon Monday:

Hopkinton — 7:15 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Ashland — 7:15 a.m. – 1:20 p.m.

Framingham — 7:30 a.m. – 1:55 p.m.

Natick — 8:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.

Wellesley — 8:30 a.m. – 3:35 p.m.

Newton — 8 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.

Brookline — 9 a.m. – 5:45 p.m.

Boston (variable) — 7 p.m.

And in Boston while the only street that is technically “closed” is Comm Ave, all the surrounding streets have restrictions of “no-stoping” all day as well.

The T closures

Copley Station on the Green Line near the finish line is closed all day. And because the Green Line follows the Marathon route quite a ways, many other stops are out of service as well from 10am-6pm — South Street (B train), Kent Street (C train), and St. Mary’s Street (C train).

If you need to use the T on Marathon Monday, get off at either Arlington Street (serving any of the Green Line trains), Prudential (E train), Hynes Convention Center Station (B, C or D train), or Back Bay on the Orange Line or Commuter Rail.

Commuter Rail schedule Marathon Monday

The commuter rail operates on a regular weekday schedule but bikes are not allowed on the Framingham/Worcester Line the day before the Marathon or on the day of the marathon.

Bikes are not allowed

Not allowed on any MBTA subway train or bus on April 17.
