If mean-spirited snarksters had set out to trash the reputation of Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, they couldn’t have done a more vicious job than the Oscar winner herself does with her directorial debut. Julianne Hough is actually the least obnoxious element, playing Lamb, a chirpy Montana teen whose faith is shaken after a plane crash mars her perfect body. Setting out for Las Vegas armed with a ceaseless supply of quips, she becomes the vanilla focal point of a tiresomely sarcastic maturation adventure, in which actors like Holly Hunter and Octavia Spencer renege on their goodwill.
