Time Out says

A few weeks ago, I attended an elaborate prix-fixe dinner where every dish on the tasting menu had a special meaning and significance to the chef and his home country. There was a lot of storytelling that could’ve easily been lost on the wrong crowd and may still, in fact, go over some people’s heads. I can’t recall most of what I ate, but the thought and intention I witnessed that night left a mark.

I’m left with a similar feeling after spending three nights at The Langham Boston, having experienced a place where a throw pillow isn’t just a cushion but an expression of turn-of-the-century fashion and the art extends beyond decor—among many other details. Housed in the former Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the 43-year-old Financial District hotel went through an extensive renovation during the pandemic, reopening in 2021 with a flurry of improvements that included the addition of a new ballroom, a pub-style bar called The Fed and Grana—a stunning Italian restaurant in the former grand hall of the bank—as well as the introduction of an extensive new art collection.

I noticed the modern works immediately upon entering the property and later learned the collection comprises nearly 300 pieces, some sourced from The Copley Society (the oldest non-profit of its kind in the U.S.), others commissioned for the hotel—and nearly half representing the local artistic community. Most of the pieces pay tribute to The Langham’s previous life as a financial institution, and some are even for sale: Just behind the elevators, there’s a hallway that functions as a rotating gallery featuring works by local artists. There’s a self-guided tour of the collection available if you scan the QR code next to the lobby elevators. I recommend it.

Bank culture and the Art Deco and neoclassical styles of the 1920s and ‘30s, when the reserve was founded, inspired much of the design. The banking desk lamps and safety deposit boxes are some of the more obvious nods but don’t miss the lobby carpet pattern that looks like the back of a dollar bill and the stylish in-room cellarettes fashioned after vintage luggage trunks.

The hotel has a variety of rooms, ranging from a superior room with a queen bed to bi-level and multi-bedroom suites. The decor is relaxed but sophisticated, featuring a modern New England style that mixes light and airy colors with darker wood tones, bold metals and natural materials, such as the marble floor in the bathrooms. Speaking of, the bathroom is stocked with the best-smelling Diptyque products, including hand soap, lotion and shampoo. You can buy them downstairs to take home, or you can just wash your hands and moisturize a lot like I did. The other little extras, like the dental and sewing kits, were also a nice touch.

We were lucky enough to stay on the executive floor, where guests have access to The Langham Club. It opens 7am to 8pm and offers a variety of food, snacks and drinks throughout the day. Guests can also have their clothing pressed, shoes shined and one item of clothing laundered throughout their stay, making it a worthwhile investment for busy business travelers. In my case, as a tired parent traveling with a demanding toddler, it paid for itself in snacks (I required them at odd hours), warm milk (for her) and coffee (for me) and peace of mind (a quiet, relaxing retreat is truly invaluable): Every afternoon while my daughter napped, you could find me at a window seat, sipping a crisp Champagne and reading a book.

Yes, it’s luxurious, but The Langham also excels at allowing guests to relish the simple pleasures of travel—comfortable spaces, attractive design, warm hospitality, and the option to treat themselves at any time of the day.

Neighborhood

The Langham is in Boston’s Financial District and within a 15-minute walk of many attractions and landmarks, such as Boston Common, the New England Aquarium and the North End, where you’ll have your pick of the city’s top Italian restaurants. It’s a bit quieter on weekends, but you can still find places to eat and shop nearby.

Nearby

New England Aquarium A meeting place for the Duck Tours and a great way to spend a chilly afternoon: observing the penguins and peering into fish tanks of all sizes.

Boston Duck Tours These hybrid land and river tours are a must in Boston and provide you with a ton of local history and laughs.

Mariel The Cuban-inspired supper club aims to transport guests to the island with elaborate cocktails, murals of Havana and, depending on the time of day, booming music.

Time Out tip

Don’t overlook The Langham’s wellness amenities, like the 40-foot heated indoor pool and adjacent whirlpool, as well as a sprawling fitness center with several Peloton bikes available for use.
