Time Out says

CitizenM opens its second Boston hotel in a prime location a short distance from Fenway Park, in the heart of historic Back Bay. The 15-story tower, which officially opens Tuesday, Sept. 3, is citizenM’s largest hotel to date, featuring 399 rooms with XL king-size beds and prime views of the city. The citizenM brand, which also has a property at North Station, is beloved by millennial and business travelers for “affordable luxury”—think: high-tech amenities, comfort and elevated hospitality, with nightly rates starting at $129. During a recent pre-opening stay, I saw the appeal.

The moment the elevator opens into the lobby, you’ll notice pops of color and the distinct design the brand is known for. At citizenM Back Bay, colorful couches surrounded by shelves filled with fun trinkets, and a rooftop area with views of the city are two common areas where you can sip incredible cocktails from the bar (be sure to try the Citizen Jasmine).

The hotel plays a key role in the new Lyrik development, built over the Mass. Turnpike across from Hynes Convention Center Station in the Back Bay. Designed as a play-stay-work area for the new headquarters of CarGurus and The LEGO Group, it’s a European-style outdoor plaza, which gives hotel guests easy access to retail and restaurant amenities. A Rivian showroom is open now (one of the fastest growing EV makers in America), and coming soon are George Howell Coffee, Avra Estiatorio, a Greek restaurant; Pink Carrot, a café offering juices and healthy eats, and Chicha San Chen teahouse. As the development continues to open into 2025, the plaza will launch creative programming, like live music nights and art installations, to introduce people to the space. The first public event is on Saturday, Sept. 8.

“The Back Bay neighborhood is a historic area, featuring delicious eateries and bustling small businesses—we are excited to become part of this community and the Lyrik development,” says Robin Chadha, chief brand officer for citizenM. “With our curated selection of artwork, rooftop bar, and this prime location, citizenM Boston Back Bay will be the go-to spot for vibrant offerings and stunning city views.”

This is citizenM’s 36th hotel worldwide. Each property somehow reflects the city in which it’s located, and Back Bay is no exception. To highlight Boston’s artistic expression, the team commissioned a piece for the entrance facade from Maria Molteni, a Queer interdisciplinary artist and designer, which honors their great grandmother’s passion for weaving and Molenti’s experience as an ocean rower. It would be easy to spend hours just milling around the lobby admiring art, sipping craft cocktails at the bar and maybe dabbling in a game pulled from one of the tables. The lobby also boasts a fireplace and a TV.

Created for travelers on the go, the hotel blends both ease and comfort. Spaces are designed to feel welcoming, yet intimate for those looking for a quiet moment or a cozy coworking space. As a solo traveler, the King room was the ideal size for me with gorgeous views of Boston’s brownstones and Charles River. Modern and sleek, each room has a tablet for controlling the mood lights, temperature, television and conveniently, the blackout shades and day blinds. The room offers everything you need in a compact space, including a mini-fridge, sink, closet, bed and power rain shower. CitizenM also has a 24-hour restaurant with a breakfast buffet offered each morning for $21.

At the heart of citizenM’s outstanding service and signature personality, and the standout for me during my stay, were the staff members or “ambassadors.” Trained in all jobs, from receptionist and problem-solver to barista and bartender, they are there to help with any problem you may have. With modern touches like high-tech self-check-in service and a self-ironing room, the hotel also provides a helping hand at every turn—and does it stylishly.

Neighborhood

Stroll through Boston’s buzzing Back Bay and admire the European feel of Newbury Street. Whether you’re in the mood for a little window-shopping, history or a peaceful walk along the tree-lined streets of Comm. Ave, there’s a little something for everyone here in Back Bay.

Nearby

  1. Fenway: Game day? Walk 10 minutes to catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park or enjoy the scene at your pick of bustling bars nearby. Not a sports fan? There's plenty else to do in the vibrant neighborhood, from checking out Time Out Market to catching a show at the House of Blues or MGM Music Hall.

  2. Boston Common: No trip to Boston is complete without a stroll through Boston Common. Swan boats, wildlife, gardens, and incredible people watching, Boston Common is ideal to explore year round. Watch as the Frog Pond turns from a paddling pool to an ice-rink in just a few short months.

  3. Mapparium: Located inside the Mary Baker Eddy Library, the Mapparium is a three-story, stained-glass illuminated globe that has a walkway through the middle. To walk through is an incredible experience, and one not to miss.
