Time Out says

Inspired by the Schiller drama, and adapted by Donizetti for the opera – with the help of librettist Giuseppe Bardari – this is the tale of the confrontation between the queens of Scotland and England, Maria Stuarda and her cousin Elizabeth I. The work was forgotten for a century until its rediscovery in 1958. Directed by Marc Sala, as part of the 'L'òpera entre bambolines' cycle.
