In 2014, New York–based NGO 92Y Street decided to use this time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to come up with an altruistic initiative, Giving Tuesday. It's a day to donate food, money, time and support to those in need. You can collaborate with projects and associations that already exist or start new ones. You can participate individually, in groups, with your family or as a company. Think of it as the opposite of Black Friday.
A year ago the initiative arrived in Catalonia, when 260 projects participated and raised a total of €405,000. This year hundreds of projects are participating, including the Food Bank, the Blood Bank (who propose that blood donors bring a friend to double the donations), and the Red Cross's No Child Without a Toy campaign, which, during December and January collects new toys that are not gender-specific and not related to guns or warfare for children who otherwise might not receive any gifts this holiday season.
Companies can also participate, and in addition to collaborating with projects already involved in Giving Tuesday, anyone can start up a fundraising campaign as well, so there are no excuses not to pitch in.
