Time Out says

Barcelona in 1700 celebrated Carnival with boundless energy, making the party one of the city's biggest of the year, when the locals ran wild with gluttony and debauchery before the austerity of Lent. If you wander the city streets during Carnival now you can partake in some of the splendour and brilliance of the festival as it's celebrated today. Take in the costumes and traditions, and join in with the locals with your own full costume or mask as Barcelona parties like it's 1699 with freedom spilling into the streets, while long-ago memories of oppression from the Church and the later defeat in 1714 are crushed under parades and dancing.
