In 1975, a young Colm Tóibín travelled from Dublin to Barcelona, fascinated by the city that George Orwell described in his classic 'Homage to Catalonia'. What he found was a city bustling with political and cultural activity, which he immortalised in his own book 'Homage to Barcelona'. As part of the events of 2014 Orwell Day, Tóibín revisits the work of the British author and examines other sources of the history of the beginning of the civil war in Barcelona, while recalling, 40 years on, the atmosphere of the city where he lived when it was still emerging from the Franco dictatorship.
