Art Blakey (1919-1990) left his mark on the history of jazz in a big way. Those who played as part of his Messengers include illustrious musicians who are beacons of contemporary jazz such as Wayne Shorter and Wynton Marsalis. Between 1982 and 1986 the saxophonist Jean Toussaint was also a Messenger alongside Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison and Mulgrew Miller. Now it's Toussaint who wants to pay special tribute to Blakey with a live show that highlights the essence of the band and the explosion of a hard bop that created a whole new school of jazz.
