Ten years after the release of his first album, Devendra Banhart might have shed his dishevelled locks, but he remains as strange and unpredictable as ever. Born in Houston to a Venezuelan mother, he released his eighth record this year, entitled 'Mala' (2013), which has taken him to New York after a stint in California. The title of the album is not a reference to the Spanish word for 'bad', but a Serbian word meaning 'small', which sums up the spirit of the album perfectly: an intimate collection of songs full of his by now trademark, unusual folk-pop.
